Chapter 20

Nadine tossed and turned all night. Every little sound startled her awake, and she imagined a menacing figure prowling around outside her house. The only thing that kept her from calling Patti and asking if she could spend the night was the lackadaisical attitude of Poe and Nell. They slept soundly despite her agitation, assuring her there was nothing outside waiting to get her.

Their morning beach walk proved to be an excellent remedy for Nadine’s fatigue, and within a few minutes of feeling the salty wind blowing her hair and listening to the waves’ smooth lapping, she felt revived and ready to face the day.

Thirty minutes later, she dropped Poe and Nell off at Sugar Paws and headed to The Bread Box for coffees and pastries, Madison Hutch be damned. Her fear from the night before had dissipated, leaving only anger, and she almost hoped Madison would show up so she could give her a piece of her mind.

Nadine stepped into the bakery and was hit with the smell of freshly brewed coffee, bread, and toasted pecans.

Ethel turned around at the sound of the doorbell and smiled broadly. “Hi, Nadine! I haven’t seen you in a while. How have you been?”

“I’ve been better,” she admitted. The bakery was empty except for the two women, so Nadine took a moment to tell her about the threatening note left on her door the day before.

“My goodness, that’s awful,” Ethel said.

“I thought it might be Madison since she’s been so mean ever since I moved here. You know her. What do you think?”

“Madison can be snarly, that’s for sure, but going out of her way to leave a note like that doesn’t really seem like her style. She prefers to have an audience when she belittles someone.”

“That’s a good point,” Nadine said. “Then it must be someone who has some stake in the murder case, don’t you think?”

“Goodness, I’m in no position to make an assumption like that,” Ethel said. Then continued thoughtfully, “You know, Nadine, normally I’m all for people living their lives how they choose, but maybe you should back off a bit. For your own safety, at least.”

“I appreciate your concern, but backing off isn’t really my MO.”

The doorbell tinkled and two women entered, each jostling a stroller through the door. Realizing their time for private conversation was up, Nadine placed her order and listened to the two women chit-chat and coo at each other’s babies as if they didn’t have a care in the world. She couldn’t help but be a little jealous.
